All day breakfast

Message 03/09/07:

On a long journey from the New Forest to Brighton (19/8/07), we had recently backed out of the Rownhams services after we saw the appalling food quality and outrageous prices. While looking for an alternative place to eat, we took a wrong turn and stumbled across the Broadcut Sainsbury's (at least I think that was the one, just off the M27 near Portsmouth). I was pleasantly surprised by the reasonable quality and generous portion sizes of the all day breakfast. Also I found the prices to be far more reasonable than other services found on the A27. Congratulations!

Having proclaimed my appreciation, I feel it is only fair to point out that my friend, Cathy Jones (who shares her surname with the manager of the store) was not so overwhelmed. In fact she was surprised and disappointed to find that some of her chips were stuck to the yolks of her fried eggs, thus rendering both eggs and chips inedible. Apparently this spoiled her whole weekend and she spent the rest of the day an angry Libran. I took a picture of the offending items (and her exasperated expression) with my mobile phone as evidence, should you wish to see it.

In conclusion I would say that in our party of 4 visitors to your restaurant, 75% of us were pleased with our purchases, so overall I think that is a good result. Well done!

Best wishes

Thank you for your email. It is encouraging to hear that you enjoyed your meal so much when visiting the restaurant at our Broadcut store recently.

Serving our customers well is one of our key priorities so I am pleased you were pleasantly surprised by the reasonable quality and generous portion sizes of the all day breakfast. I am very grateful to you for your positive comments.

It is however disappointing to learn that your friend Cathy was unhappy with the meal that she received and I can appreciate how frustrating this must have been for her. Please pass on my apologies to her that on this occasion we let her down.

I have arranged for a £5 voucher to be sent to you. Would you please pass this voucher onto Cathy as a goodwill gesture for her disappointment. I would like her to use it to buy something she enjoys when she next visits one of our stores.

Once again thank you for taking the time to contact us. I do hope you will continue to enjoy shopping at Sainsbury's in the future.

Kind regards

Pancakes

Message 5/11/2005:

I recently purchased a pack of 8 scotch pancakes that said "I love juicy blueberries" in big letters on the front. I was surprised to find that these were not blueberry pancakes, seeing as "blueberries" was even bigger than "scotch pancakes" on the front of the pack. I found this deceptive and disappointing.

Thank you for your email; I am very sorry that you were unhappy with the scotch pancakes that you bought from our xxxx store recently; I can certainly understand your disappointment, especially as you thought that the pancakes contained blueberries.

I do agree that the packaging is misleading; We have informed our buyer of this issue and they have discussed it with the suppliers; They agree that the packaging is misleading and are now in the process of changing it.

Please accept our sincere apologies for the confusion this matter has caused you; I hope that you will be able to use them to purchase something that you particularly enjoy the next time you visit xxxx

Thank you once again for contacting us; I hope that you will be happy with our products in the future.
Kind regards

Prebiotics

Message 09/08/06:
Can you tell me which carbohydrates constitute "Prebiotics" and how these stimulate the growth of "good" bacteria?
Thanks

Reply 10/08/06:

Many thanks for your email.
Prebiotics are defined as non-digestible food ingredients that beneficially affect the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon, that can improve the host's health. There is good evidence supporting the use of inulin, fructo-oligosaccharide and acacia gum as prebiotics. These complex carbohydrates generally reach the human colon intact because humans lack the required digestive enzymes to break the particular chemical bonds in these carbohydrates. In the colon there are typically many different species of bacteria. Some have a positive effect on human health (i.e. the friendly bacteria), some have a negative effect and others are neutral. Bifidobacteria is an example of the friendly bacteria. The friendly bacteria, like bifidobacteria, posses an enzyme that enables them to digest prebiotic substances such as inulin. The prebiotic substances are carefully selected as those for which the bad bacteria lack enzymes to digest but the good bacteria do i.e. they are food for the good bacteria but useless to the bad bacteria. Thus, by consuming prebiotics, the good bacteria in the colon flourish, generally at the expense of the bad bacteria.
Hope this helps and thank you again for taking the time to contact us.

Oatibix - Nutrition/Health enquiry

Are there any plans to release "reduced sugar" versions of Oatibix? I like them a lot but think the sugar content is too high for a healthy breakfast. Thanks.

Reply 28/9/06

Thank you for suggesting reduced sugar versions of Oatibix.
At present we have no plans to produce these variations. However, if sufficient demand can be established we will of course reconsider the situation. Your enquiry will form part of our market research in this area.
We take all comments from our consumers seriously and always consider them in our attempts to provide the best possible breakfast cereals we can.
Once again, many thanks for taking the trouble to contact us. It was great to hear from you.

Welcome

Welcome to Stu's "Do the Write Thing" blog.

This is the result of a suggestion by Cathy Jones, who thought I should publish my attempts to make the world a better place...

The postings come from communications I have had with service providers around the country (nay, world!). They arise when I have been so moved by the subject matter that I have had no choice but to pass comment back to the originator. Others are merely quests for knowledge to satisfy my curiosity. You may find some replies educational as well as enjoyable.

I'm a strong believer in feedback - positive or negative, as you will see as my postings go online.

I have removed names and addresses from correspondance in case this gets me into trouble... It's meant to be a bit of fun - apologies if I cause offence.

Enjoy!
